Onna Village, or Onna-son, is located in the middle of Okinawa, Japan on the western side. The village itself houses tropical crops, resorts, spectacular snorkeling spots, Cape Manza (Elephant Rock), and breathtaking views of the East China Sea.
Nestled on the side of the road, while passing through Onna-son, is a modest cluster of shops which happen to be home Ryu-pin, a dessert shop with the best shaved ice that’s ever touched my lips. I’m not talking about blue or red cones of coursely shaven ice that you have to chisel with your teeth. I’m talking about snow like fluff drizzled with sweet milk and topped with exotic fruits.
Unusual toppings like purple sweet potato are surprisingly delicious while giving tourists a taste of tradition. Pineapple, mango and passion fruit chunks can be added on top. Other seasonal flavors are available throughout the year.
You should also know that these Okinawan desserts are straight up enormous! You seriously can share with someone who doesn’t have cooties. I can’t think of a better treat to snack on while taking in the deep indigo waters and mountainous structures. Sometimes the simplest travel experiences are the very best, like spending time with family on one of the world’s most beautiful beaches, and eating something sweet.
